The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) is making incredible strides towards enhancing the country’s medical and wellness tourism. With its recent participation in the WTN SUMMIT TIME 2023 Forum, the ministry has shown its commitment to this sector and its promising prospects for Indonesia’s future development.
Vinsensius Jemadu, the Deputy for Destination and Infrastructure Development at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, expressed his appreciation for the event’s focus on Health Tourism during the WTN SUMMIT TIME 2023 held in Bali. He emphasized the substantial potential Indonesia holds for the growth and advancement of Medical and Wellness Tourism.
In the past, many Indonesians sought medical and wellness services in Penang and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which could have been provided within Indonesia. President Joko Widodo recognized this gap and established a Special Economic Zone (KEK) for Health Tourism in Sanur. This designated zone is specifically tailored to cater to the needs of Medical and Wellness Tourism, making it an ideal location for the development of this sector.
Vinsensius Jemadu proudly highlighted that the Sanur SEZ meets international standards and offers an integrated area featuring general and specialized hospitals, hotels and resorts, commercial areas, and other essential facilities. However, he stressed the importance of intensified promotion and collaboration between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Tourism to maximize the potential of Medical and Wellness Tourism.
During the WTN Summit TIME 2023, several Memoranda of Understanding were signed between the Bali Medical Tourism Association (BMTA), the Junior Doctors Network Indonesia, and the World Tourism Network (WTN) to strengthen collaboration and promote this niche market. The Chairman of BMTA sees the new medical tourism zone in Sanur as a unique model that will propel Bali’s medical tourism industry to new heights.
Dr. Peter Tarlow, President of WTN, emphasized the importance of involving all stakeholders in the realization of the Sanur SEZ, highlighting his expertise in Medical Tourism, World Safety, and Security. Additionally, WTN’s founder, Juergen Steinmetz, announced the creation of a task force facilitated by WTN to foster global opportunities and information exchange in Medical Tourism.
The Ministry of Tourism in Indonesia is making remarkable strides in boosting the country’s Medical and Wellness Tourism sector. With its focus on the development of the Sanur SEZ and collaborations with industry associations, Indonesia is well on its way to becoming a leading destination for medical and wellness travelers.
